Agriculture 




About 60-70 percent people in India live on Agriculture and about 50 percent (approx 142.42 million hectares) of total land under cultivation .There are two major crop seasons :Kharif  and Rabi


1)Kharif crops sown in June-July and harvested in September-October.Main cultivations are rice,jawar,bajra,ragi,maize,cotton and Jute .

2)Rabi crops are sown in October-December and harvested in April-May.Main cultivations are wheat,barley,peas,rap seed,mustard and gram .

Some Landmarks in Indian Agriculture

Green Revolution :To  increase agricultural output,Green revolution was launched in 1967-68 .The first Green Revolution took place mainly in  the states of Punjab,Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to increase wheat production .
The second green revolution(1983-84) happened mainly in eastern states including Odisha,Bihar ,Madhya Pradesh and Eastern Part of Uttar Pradesh .
Due to the impact of green revolution ,the wheat production got doubled and rice production increased by 53 per cent .

Operation flood -To increase the milk market in urban areas ,operation flood was launched in 1970-81 in collaboration with the world Bank .

Operation Flood II-It was launched in 1981 and was extended to all states .

Operation flood III- (1985-90) waslaunched in 1985 during the seventh five year plan .These programs were implemented under National dairy development Board and Indian Dairy corporation .
Banking on these programmes ,India became the second largest producer of milk in the world,only next to United States .

Irrigation and Agriculture -

Due to climatic positions ,agriculture in India mainly depends on rains .However rainwater is not sufficient to meet the requirements of the agriculture .There are others methods used for providing water for cultivation ,called irrigation .

Methods of Irrigation -

Wells account for about 47 percent of the total irrigated land in the country .These are mainly used in Uttar Pradesh ,Punjab,Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra .
Tanks supply water to about 10 percent of the total irrigated areas .These are mainly used in central and southern India .
Canals account for about 40 percent of the total irrigated areas .These are mainly used in Uttar Pradesh ,Punjab,Haryana and Odisha .
