Forests in India





India covers about 2 percent of the world's total forest area .The total area under forest land in India is 21.05 percent and Madhya Pradesh has the largest forest area.

India has six types of forests

1-Evergreen forests (Tropical forests ):Found in the areas that receive an average 200-300 cm of rainfall .Average annual temperature is 20-27 degree centigrade .and average humidity is more than 80 percent .It is found in the Western Ghats and Sub Himalayan Regions.Trees that grow in these forests are teak,rose wood,ebony and bamboo .

2-Deceduous forests (monsoon forests ) - found in places that receive lesser rainfall between 150 -200 cm,have an average temperature of 24- 28 degree centigrade and humidity is about 75 percent.Trees found in these forests are sal and sandal wood and are spread across Maharashtra ,Madhya Pradesh and  Karnataka .

3-Dry forests -found in those areas that receive scanty rainfall between 75-100cm ,have an average annual temperature between 23-29 degree celcilus and humidity 50-60 percent .Trees found are Palm,Acacia etc .

4-Hill forests - Found in Himalayas and Southern India .Trees found are oak ,pine ,deodar ,walnut,maple ,chestnut etc .

5-Tidal forests (mangroove)-Found in coastal submerged plains of Ganges(Sundarbans),delta of Mahanadi and Godavari .

6-Grasslands-found in hilly area of Himalayas ,Deccan hills above 100m,low lands as in Punjab ,Haryana,Uttar Pradesh,Bihar and riverine grassland .
